Stainless steel is primarily made from iron and carbon, plus a minimum chromium content of 10.5%. Chromium reacts with oxygen in the air to form a protective coating; as a rule of thumb the higher the chromium the greater the protection and the less likely it is to rust.
There are hundreds of grades of stainless steel in the market, but over time even the highest grade will rust if not maintained correctly, due to an oxidation reaction with the iron.
