Bird Deterrent System – Edgar Centre

Client/Scope of work:

Dunedin City Council engaged Goleman Group to assess the ongoing seagull activity at the Edgar Centre and develop a practical, long-term bird deterrent solution. Goleman scoped, supplied and installed a roof-mounted bird laser system designed to provide coverage across the centre’s extensive roof area.

Specific issues to be addressed:

Due to the Edgar Centre’s close proximity to the coast, seagulls were regularly gathering and roosting across the large roof. The resulting droppings and debris created considerable mess, required repeated cleaning and had the potential to cause staining, blocked drainage and accelerated deterioration of roof surfaces if left unmanaged.

Special considerations:

Access to the installation area was via the roof, requiring appropriate working-at-height planning and controls. The laser position, operating range and programmed movement also needed to be carefully considered to provide effective coverage while maintaining safe operation around the facility and surrounding environment.

What was done and why?

Goleman installed a roof-mounted bird laser to deter seagulls across the 18,633.08 m² roof area, covering a total distance of 646.34m.

Outcome:

Before the laser was installed, the roof required cleaning every six months. Since installation, cleaning has reduced to once every two years.

Follow-up work required:

Goleman services and inspects the bird laser annually to ensure the system continues to operate effectively.
