Concrete Siphon Pipe Inspection – North Otago Irrigation Company

Client/Scope of work:

North Otago Irrigation Company (NOIC). The Lower Waitaki Irrigation Company’s Main Race was drained. This provided an opportunity for NOIC to understand the condition of the structures, the state of the network, and what maintenance and future works may be required.

Specific issues to be addressed:

The inspection program faced a tight completion timeline and required water pumping, cleaning, confined space management, and handling of fish and eels, along with flood risk considerations. To mitigate these challenges, we planned crew numbers, prioritised inspection structures, coordinated pumping operations, ensured crew were trained, and monitored weather conditions closely.

Special considerations:

To carry out a comprehensive condition assessment, access to the internal spaces of the structure was essential. This involved entering confined areas and potentially working at heights to reach required locations. Additionally, it was necessary to isolate the water inlets. Given these complexities, it was vital to implement stringent control measures to ensure the safety and well-being of all technicians on site.

What was done and why?

Races and siphons were drained and inspected for damage to confirm water flow. Where necessary, siphons were cleared of stones and debris. Upon completing the inspection, repairs were made using Sika Mortar and crack repair products. Since the project was completed ahead of schedule, Goleman was able to conduct an additional 120-meter siphon inspection and clean five air pressure chambers for the irrigation company.

Special equipment used?

Highly skilled technicians trained in confined space were deployed for safety and efficiency. Additionally, specialised equipment such as Gas Detectors were utilised in confined areas to ensure optimal safety conditions.

Client Feedback:

“The team were great, look forward to working with Goleman in the future.”
