Roof Access Upgrade – SkyCity

Client/Scope of work:

SkyCity Hamilton. Review and replace the existing non-compliant Roof Access System at the SkyCity complex,Hamilton Central.

Specific issues to be addressed:

The glass dome required fall protection for ongoing contractors working nearby. Existing plant platforms needed additional safety features, and protection was required between parapet walls, along with improved access between the different roof levels. Also a static line was needed on the rear roof.

Special considerations:

Most of the roof areas worked on were metal deck roofs (Colorsteel), except for the membrane roof beneath the glass dome. Due to the membrane roof, plywood plinths had to be installed and waterproofed before we could secure the guardrail posts. As the casino operates daily, we also had to ensure that all roof areas were cleaned down at the end of each workday.

What was done and why?

Non-compliant height safety systems were removed and disposed of prior to the new systems being installed. Guardrails were installed around the plant platform, along with aluminum steps for access. The addition of a static line system along the rear roof area, and installation of guardrails around the glass dome were required for fall protection. Guardrails were added between parapet walls on the upper roof, and an access ladder installed to connect the upper roof and lower roofs.

Client Feedback:

The project was completed several days ahead of schedule. The client was highly satisfied with our work and has requested a proposal for a new on-site project.
